Buried Treasure

I went out to my personal lumberyard, which in its former life was a 2-car garage, to retrieve some walnut for a new project. There's lumber out there that I've had for 15 years and for some weird reason, I remember where most of it came from.

This particular pile of walnut came from a friend's house in WV. Being rough cut, I wasn't able to see just how beautiful the wood was until I ran it through my planer. It's black walnut with curly figure in the grain. Now, I had pulled this lumber to build doors for the assembly table in my workshop, but seeing how gorgeous it is, I might have to use it for something more special.

Second thought, what's more special than my shop? ; )

What is more special?

In the hands of a more talented woodworker, this lovely walnut would be a tall case clock or drawer fronts on a highboy...

When I get settled back in the states I will have a bunch of questions for you. I like to do woodworking on the side as a hobby.

I'll be happy to talk woodworking with you whenever you're home.
You are also welcome to visit my shop if you find yourself in Harrisburg, PA.

Be forewarned, I can talk about woodworking for DAYS....

What kinds of things do you like to build?

I had done bookcases and different types of racks, but I want to learn how to do the moldings. Pretty much the extra stuff that has nothing to do with function.

Molding will definitely spruce up a piece of furniture and make it look more refined. Making your own molding is easier than you might think. Let me know when you're back and I'll help you out.
