Boring Movie

I wasn't able to attend the WIA in August, so I did not see the Handtool Olympics contests. Nor did I see the "Boring Cat Fight" between Megan Fitzpatrick and Heather Griffin, and I'm going to compete against them at the WIA in October.

From start to finish, I can bore a plumb hole in a stud in 13 seconds. Does anyone know how that time holds up against my two opponents? Do I need to do more push ups?

Because my preference is to sit on my butt and be lazy if it's good enough.

That would put you in the upper regions of the leaderboard from what I saw in St Charles.

Awesome. Think I'll grab a bag of chips and go watch TV. :D

I don't know... I didn't feel the passion, the drive, the will to succeed... where's the SWEAT... you better let me have those chips... mmmm chips....

Oh my no! Sit down! relax! You need absolutely no more training. Have a snack. Or three. I'll send you cookies.

(BTW - I believe 2" white pine was the contest wood in St. Charles).

And I know precisely how your time stack up...but I'm not telling ;-)

Uh oh, if they're 2" thick, then I'd better practice. I was just using 2x4 studs, so not a full 2" thick.

'Course, I'd do just about anything for homemade chocolate chip cookies. Perhaps even, shall we say..."throw" a competition?

You gotta head band on? I've heard that helps.

Megan Fitzpatrick said...

Nah - I think it was dimensional stock, so you're working in the right thickness. "Throw" the compe...very nice. I'm more than a "bit" impressed.

LOL@Richard!!! Head band and tube socks, perhaps?

Megan, oh good, then I can sit on my butt. BTW, I wasn't trying to use "throw" as a double meaning. Trust me, I'm not that clever. The quotes were for emphasis.

But your "bit" comment was nice!

This just keeps getting more and more interesting. Hope there will be a video, as I will miss this WIA.
Does anybody know if there are Vegas odds yet?
Go getum girls...

I think all you have to do is chug a dozen or so raw eggs and jump up and down with your hands above your head in old gray sweats the day before if you want to win.

I checked the Vegas numbers, Megan is a slight favorite at 6 to 5 odds. Tho some new money seems to be betting on you. That might mean several things ... some muscle was seen heading East so I dropped several C notes on you. So, relax and we'll make some serious money.

Kari... do you bring your own brace and bit or are they supplied? If you get to bring your own, or to fettle it ahead of time... heh heh heh. There is a lot that can be done. All depends on lead screw threads, cutting edges, polish, etc.

Stance and arm swing is of course important. Watching how the lead cutter enters the wood is vital to getting a perpendicular bore. And so on.

I've also heard of souping up a brace with a nitro-methane mixture...

I have a question – should we be bringing our Pompoms?

Kari Hultman said...

Pompoms and other cheerleading apparatus are enthusiastically encouraged.

Gary, all the tools are supplied at the competitions, so no fettling allowed. 'Course I am friends with the man in charge. (Right, Mike?.....Mike?)

Thanks for the advice on watching the cutter enter the wood, chugging raw eggs, and wearing old grey sweats. I'll probably also wear a terry cloth headband just to cover all the bases.
